Paints and Finishes
Lead is often found in the paint of some old wood and metal toys or on imported toys especially in sets of metal soldiers. Not only do children put toys into their mouth and thereby ingest lead directly, they paint may flake and rub onto children's hands during play. Lead is associated with a host of learning disabilities and behaviour disorders, and even low exposures can carry lifelong effects.
Check labels to make sure paints and finishes are non-toxic.
The natural wood used may be non-toxic and from a sustainable source, but often the paints and varnishes used to finish the toys or puzzles are toxic to humans and the environment. Natural oil finishes, such as linseed and walnut oils or beeswax are safest. Mineral oil is not recommended for children under three years.
